ELIZABETH, queen of England (1558-1603) was a daughter of the great king Henry YIII and his second wife Anne Boleyn. When she was a child, her mother was executed and she declared illegitimate.
She became queen when she was 25. Her reign was one of the greatest periods in English history. It produced such men as Shakespeare, philosopher Francis Bakon, sailor and poet Walter Raleigh. England became a first-rate European power with a great navy. Commerce and industry prospered and colonisation began.
